WE ARE YOUR SONG, AMERICA Cast size 35-85 Ages 8-18
The immediate goal in writing this musical was for educational purposes. Helene Schlafman, Director of Education Emeritus at Congregation Beth Israel in San Diego (where this show was originally produced) was interested in pursuing a dramatic twist to her immigration curriculum when she approached me with this idea.
I did extensive research in 1993 before Ellis Island was reopened to the public, including receiving a personal one on one tour with the museum curator. I went behind the scenes and felt as if I lived the experience. It was always my hope that each cast member witness their personal history as it reveals itself throughout the rehearsal process. I received enormous confirmation that this happened from cast members throughout the country, including a cast made up of recent Russian Immigrants in San Francisco.
Each person taking part in this production is strongly encouraged to research their family tree before rehearsals begin ( located in the Director's handbook).
Invite all grandparents. With the right casting, reasonably good sets and authentic costuming, you'll never believe this is a children's musical. I guarantee it! |
